A
gathering of hundreds of noisy demonstrators mobbed a downtown hotel
Sunday afternoon to protest dictatorial conditions in Ethiopia.
A
meeting of the Etho-Abay Association of Calgary was being held at the
Ramada Downtown Calgary Hotel on 8 Ave.
S.W. on Sunday at which the
Ethiopian Consul General was expected to attempt to secure funds for a
controversial dam/bridge building project in the African nation.
Hotel
management prevented the protest group from gaining access to the
meeting which was being held in one of the building’s conference rooms
on a floor above the ground level. The demonstrators continued their
rally in the hotel’s lobby and front entrance.
Police officers responded to the hotel. The demonstration remained peaceful with protesters chanting and singing their message.
