When I wrote a commentary on the plight of the imprisoned 32-year old Ethiopian journalist Reeyot Alemu last April, I titled it “The Audacity of Evil in Ethiopia.” At the time, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) had sent a letter to the “Minister of Justice” of the ruling regime in Ethiopia pleading medical care for Reeyot and urging them to spare her from a threatened solitary confinement. In that commentary, I explained why I was compelled to “stray from my professional fields of law and politics” to moral philosophy.

The Ethiopian regime seems to misunderstand what the people of Ethiopia are demanding. The sooner the regime gets it and surrender peacefully for democratic rule the better it would be. Playing hide-and-seek game isn’t going to do it.  Spewing empty ethnic and religious propaganda isn’t going to save it. Hiding behind corrupt investments and empty growth propaganda isn’t a substitute for freedom. Tormenting the population and jailing the innocent with empty bravado isn’t going to help it form its inevitable demise. Woyane and its stooges must appreciate the tolerance of our people and accept the illegitimacy of the ruling regime and live with it. Noting will change that reality.

Ethiopian opposition leads protest against government

Members of the main Ethiopian opposition part, Blue party , led protesters in the streets of Addis Ababa, demanding for a change in the political social and economic policies of the government.

The protesters wanted to march on Meskel square which is mainly used for national public gatherings. However, their demonstration was curtailed when they faced a police roadblock. The police blocked the rally saying the iconic square was under construction.

For the past one-half decade, Ethiopia has been awash with talk of renaissance. There has been a lot of windbagging about a “Renaissance Dam” over the Blue Nile. Our ears nearly fell off listening to the endless gab about an “economic renaissance” with “11 percent” plus annual growth. There has also been much talk of a political and social renaissance complete with slogans of “ethnic federalism”, multiculturalism, pluralism and other “isms” (excluding neoliberalism). Of course, all of it is talk! That is exactly what I am talking about. How come there is no talk about a renaissance for Ethiopia’s youth?

The Center for the Rights of Ethiopian Women (CREW) is gravely concerned about the imprisoned Ethiopian journalist, Reeyot Alemu’s health condition and allegations of mistreatment.

Imprisoned Ethiopian journalist Reeyot Alemu has been named the winner of the 2013 UNESCO-Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.

Reeyot Alemu, 32, is an internationally honored female journalist who has been an outspoken critic of the Ethiopian government’s human rights violations. She was arrested 2 years ago by the Ethiopian government and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Even though Reeyot Alemu’s charges have been reduced to 5 years, there is serious concern about her health and allegations of mistreatment while she is incarcerated.

በማእከላዊ ቆይታው አሰቃቂ ጊዜ አሳልፏል!

በእስር ላይ የሚገኘው ጋዜጠኛ ሰለሞን ከበደ ክስ የተመሰረተበት ከጋዜጠኝት ስራው ጋር በተያያዘ ነው፡፡ የቀድሞ የሙስሊሞች ጉዳይ መጽሄት ማኔጂንግ ዳይሬክተርና አዘጋጅ የነበረው ሰለሞን ከበደ ባለፈው ዓመት ጥር ወር ላይ ከቤቱ ወደ ስራ ቦታው ሲሄድ ታፍኖ ከተወሰደ በኋላ በማእከላዊ ለአራት ወራት ያህል አሰቃቂ ምርመራ ተደርጎበታል፡፡

እኔ “ኣሸባሪ” ከተባልኩ በኔ የተሸበረው ገዢው ፓርቲ ብቻ ነው። አብርሃ ደስታ

ትናንት በሰሩት ነገር ገርሞኝ ወድያ ወዲህ ስል ስለ ህወሓት ጉባኤ መረጃ ኣላሰባሰብኩም ነበር። ወደ ማታ ኣከባቢ በማላውቀው ስልክ ተደወለልኝ። ከተወሰነ ሰጣገባ በኋላ “ኣንተ ኣሸባሪ ነህ። በኣሸባሪነት እንደምንትያዝ ኣትጠራጠር” ኣለኝ።

“ኣዎ ኣሸባሪ ነኝ። ያሸበርኳቹ ያህል ነው የሚሰማኝ። ምክንያቱም ባላሸብራቹ ኑሮ የኔን ፌስቡክ ለማስዘጋት ባልተረባረባቹ ነበር” መለስኩለት።

ስልኩን ጀሮየ ላይ ጥርቅም ኣድርጎ ዘጋው።

“ለካ እንዲህ ለነፃነት የሚቆሙ፣ የፈለጉትን የሚፅፉ፣ ስለ ፍትሕ የሚዘምሩ ግለሰዎች ናቸው ‘ኣሸባሪ’ ተብለው በኣምባገነን ገዢዎች የሚሰየሙት” ስል ኣሰላሰልኩ። “ኣሸባሪ” የሚለውን ስም ወድጀዋለሁ። “ኣሸባሪ” መሆን ደስ ይላል። ጥያቄው መሆን ያለበት ‘የሚሸበረው ኣካል ማነው?’ (ሰለማዊ ህዝብ ወይስ ገዢው መደብ) ነው። ምናልባት እኔ “ኣሸባሪ” ከተባልኩ በኔ የተሸበረው ገዢው ፓርቲ ብቻ ነው።

የሰው ለሰዉ አስናቀ - 18ሺ ብር ከፈለ!

የሕግ ባለሙያ፣ ባለሀብትና አርቲስት የሆነው አበበ ባልቻ ተከስሶ ወደ ፖሊስ ጣቢያ ሔዷል፡፡ አበበ ባልቻ ወደ ፖሊስ ጣቢያ ሊሔድ የቻለው ባለፈው ሐሙስ ሌሊት ከሙያ ባልደረቦቹ ጋር በመሆን ሸገር ሕንፃ ስር በሚገኘው ዩጎቪያ ክለብ በመዝናናት ላይ ነበር፡፡ በቦታው ለእረፍት ከኖርዌይ የመጣውና በትውልድ ኢትዮጵያዊ በዜግነት ኖርዌያዊ የሆነው ሐሰን መሐመድና የወንድሙ እጮኛ እየተዝናኑ ነበር፡፡ ከሐሰን ጋር የነበረችው ሴትም አበበ አስናቀን ሆኖ በሚጫወትበት የሰው ለሰው ድራማ ታደንቀው ስለነበር ወደ እሱ በመሄድ አብራው ፎቶ ለመነሳት ትጠይቃለች፡፡ አበበም ፈቃደኛ በመሆን አብሯቸው ይነሳል፡፡

In my commentary last week, “Interpreting and Living MLK’s Dream”, I discussed, among other things, Dr. Martin Luther King’s (MLK) philosophy of nonviolent social change. MLK argued that the “crucial political and moral question of our time” is the “need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence.” I believe the crucial political and moral question for Ethiopians today is how to transform Ethiopia into an oasis of democratic governance in the middle of a sub-Saharan desert of African tyranny in a nonviolent struggle.

We in the Solidarity Movement for a New Ethiopia (SMNE) are deeply disturbed by illegal and violent actions by the TPLF/EPRDF that prevented the Semayawi Party from carrying out its peaceful rally on Sunday, September 1. Despite receiving the go ahead from authorities to stage this lawful rally nearly two months ago, with no warning, federal police stormed and ransacked Semayawi [also known as the Blue Party] headquarters on Saturday, August 31, 2013.

To Ethiopia’s archaic left, which dominates the ruling party, the new euphemism for the west is neoliberal. Compared to the jargon of bygones days – imperialists – when Lenin and Mao were still in vogue, neoliberal sounds decidedly wimpy. But this hardly matters to Ethiopia’s ruling party. What it seeks is a bogeyman to tamp down rising expectations for multiparty democracy.

BBC – Some 100 members of Ethiopia’s opposition Semayawi (Blue) party were arrested and some badly beaten over the weekend, the party says.

Party chairman Yilekal Getachew said equipment such as sound systems were confiscated ahead of a rally on Sunday which was banned.

Communication Minister Shimeles Kemal denied there had been a crackdown.

The government said the venue had already been booked by a pro-government group condemning religious extremism.

ለረጅም ጊዜ የፍኖተ ነፃነት ጋዜጣ አዘጋጅ ሆኖ ያገለገለዉና የጋዜጣዉ ህትመት ከተቋረጠበት ጊዜ ጀምሮ የኢቦኒ መፅሔት ዋና አዘጋጅ ሆኖ በመስራት ላይ የሚገኘዉ ጋዜጠኛና ብሎገር ብስራት ወልደ ሚካኤል ሰሞኑን በ4 የደህንነት ኃይሎች ታግቶ ዛቻ እና ማስፈራሪያ እንደተፈፀመበት ተናገረ ፡፡ ድርጊቱ የተፈፀመዉ ባሳለፍነዉ ሰኞ (ነሐሴ 20 – 2005ዓ.ም) ከምሽቱ 2፡35 ላይ ከስራ ወደ ቤቱ በጉዞ ላይ እያለ ነበር፡፡

ሰማያዊ ፓርቲ ነሃሴ 26 ሊያደርገው የነበረው ሰልፍ በመንግስት ከተጨናገፈበት በኋላ ዳግም ሌላ ሰላማዊ ሰለፍ ለጳግሜ 2 ሁለት ሺህ አምስት ዓ.ም በመስቀል አደባባይ መጥራቱን ዛሬ አስታወቀ፡፡ የሰልፉ ስያሜ “ዘመቻ ለህግ የበላይነት” የተሰኘ ሲሆን ከሶስት ወራት በፊት ፓርቲው በሰላማዊ ሰልፍ የጠየቃቸው ጥያቄዎች ይመለሱልኝ ሲል አቤት የሚልበት ነው፡፡

Saturday August 31, 2013 on the eve of the Blue Party called rally in Addis the Blue Party Head Office was attacked by Western financed and supported thugs of the Ethiopian brutal security forces where more than one hundred members and supporters of the Blue Party was taken to local prisons beaten up savagely according to Eng Yelekal Getenet the party president.

In the evening of Saturday August 31, Semayawi Party headquarters around Ginfle, Addis Ababa, was buzzing like a bee hive as nearly one hundred party activists and organizers were busy making posters, writing slogans, stacking flags and other paraphernalia needed for a colorful rally. They were making the final push for a peaceful demonstration they had planned to hold the next morning with their supporters.
